Willow the Fishing in Devon Match Lake

 

Willow is one of our medium lakes which last year had a good head of Carp, Roach, Bream, Skimmers and Golden Rudd.

 

The Carp sizes were anything from 3lb up to 17lb 8oz being Casper our Ghost Carp. In the terms of bringing on carp, this lake is used for bringing on smaller Carp to a certain size and then they are moved onto the bigger lakes. When we netted in March 2008 it was decided that the Carp needed more space to mature and gain weight and so they were moved to Mirror lake, which, as we have described in the write up on Mirror Lake has had an enormous amount of silver fish removed during the March netting. This has seen these Carp increase in weight since they have been moved, Casper now showing a weight of 20 lbs plus, to improve your Devon fishing holiday experience.

 

Fishing in Devon has never been as good, 80 % of the roach were taken out of Mirror to make way for the Carp, the decision was taken to make Willow our main match lake and develop a delightful self catering cottages and fishing experience .

 

7 months on and the idea of making Willow our match lake proved to be a good one and has had great comments along with the applause for the stunning holiday cottages and fishing generally. Devon fishing holidays just got much better.

 

It really has become a great match Lake ! Doing really well and liked very much by Newton Abbot AC and 3 Elms Clubs (X2). From the March 2008 netting approximately 8000 - 9000 Silver fish have been put in from the Mirror netting, it’s now going from strength to strength.

 

As more and more people heard of the changes that we had made to Newbarn Farm they came and had a good look around and when they had seen the improvements that we had made to Willow, which had been widened around the banks so people with match poles could fish 90 % of the lake, also the lake has become more assessable with better, safer and drained pathways and more parking. Now we are seeing matches where people are catching total bags of 200 lb plus and with one gentleman having two good day sessions with one day bagging a weight of 103 lb 6oz and the second day catching a bag of 52 lb. we are also seeing regular bags of 40lb bags of silver fish.

 

So all in all the netting has been an enormous success for all the lakes and species, allowing the fish to stretch out, increase in size and improved well being.
